As October is now behind us, the air is getting a little chillier and winter seasonal brews are now upon us.

There is no set in stone method or type of ingredients that make up a winter beer, but they are generally complex veers, usually very malty and will feature more fruits and spices in the brewing process. They tend to a bit more hearty and heavy- think porters, brandywine's and dark ales- for keeping us warm during those cold winter nights (and days).

The style of winter brews originated where most beer styles originated, in monasteries during medieval and renaissance times. They served the dual purpose of being big on flavor and heavy in substance.

Winter brews are my favorite seasonal brews, because of their complexity and flavor, and in the coming weeks we'll discover some of the best ones, and good local places to drink them. In the meantime, pop open a Young's Winter Warmer and enjoy.
