If you drive about 45 minutes southwest of Zagreb, you’ll hit the Plesivica wine road. Home to over 30 wineries, it offers good signage as you try to find your way around. The majority of the grapes grown along this road are familiar white wine varieties: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Blanc, Riesling. For reds there’s some Pinot Noir and a local grape called Portugiser.
One of the best wineries I visited was Korak Wine Cellar, which makes decent Pinot Blanc and Riesling, as well as excellent Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Like most of the wineries in Croatia, it is a small property with small production. Because of this they are fairly expensive and not exported into the United States.
The Chardonnay and Pinot Noir sell at the winery for 30 Euros or about $47US. I was happy when I was able to find a bottle of this at Gil’s (restaurant) in Dubrovnik for about $95US. It was a good as I remembered and a great addition to our dinner.
Another great place to visit along the wine road is the Jagunic wine cellar. Here they are proud of their Portugiser. This is the Croatian equivalent of Beaujolais Nouveau. At the time the Portugiser is released, chestnuts are in high season for roasting. They’re a great combination, and were generously offered along with a Croatian-type of spinach strudel.
At the end of your day, you may want to stay at the Ciban Wine Cellar, which has a restaurant and hotel. When I ate there, they made an excellent goulash of venison. Never having had it before, I was pleasantly surprised at how good the goulash was.
